Assignment #3 [A]
The central question: How does memory affect an individual's personal journey and personality? How can certain sensory elements trigger a memory? And how do those visceral reactions affect us all day to day?
Visual Strategy:
My initial assignment ‘Wandering through the internet,” covered the subject of finding joy in the little things. This initial research led me to think about simple things like the smell of coffee in the morning or the sound of dishes being done. In turn, I became curious about sound art and scent used in a gallery setting. This developed further into a discussion about how these sensory elements can be connected to powerful memories. The human brain is fascinating and boundless, and the way individual minds store memories is compelling to me. Because no one person has the same memories, yet universal human experiences might cause people to have similar memory with someone depending on a variety of factors. Like, where they grew up, their age, where they went to school, and so on. Memories are something that can connect us to our past, to our identity and also the future. But more than that, it connects us to one another. We can talk about shared experiences while also recognizing that these experiences/memories will never be the same. I think this creates a sort of vulnerability in the human experience. So I want to explore and research further how memory affects us and how we can manipulate a memory to our advantage.

This image shows how the mind connects memories to places by tracking the neurons (and colour coding them) of a rat as it works its way through a maze. Pretty cool!

Sometimes we don't know we remember something until a sensory (visual) thing triggers it. I've been seeing lots of these memes lately and thought it was relevant!
Brain dump: Within the work think about how memories pertain to space, emotion and story.

Journals and books resonate with me when I think of memories as well... could be interesting. Also, love the idea of the work being interactive.
...I need to futher develop the visual exploration.
Points made in breakout room to explore:
-Music and memory in dementia/Alzheimer patients.
-How personal memories affect our relationships with one another and our ability to empathize.
